November HSA Newsletter

Please take a few minutes to look at this month’s HSA Newsletter (click here to open) which highlights upcoming events, summaries past fundraisers, and explains where volunteer help is needed.

November Parent/Teacher Conference Sign-Ups

Sign-up Sheets for Fall parent-teacher conferences (11/8 & 11/9) will be available in the hallway outside the Main Office this afternoon, Wednesday, & Thursday.  Please be sure to stop in at your convenience to sign up for a time.

3rd Grade Science

On Friday afternoon, 3rd grade students worked on another fun lab during their Science period: making and observing Oobleck.  Oobleck is a “non-Newtonian fluid” – meaning a substance that can be a solid or a liquid depending on how much force is applied.

Breaking into small groups, students had to create a “hypothesis” and answer questions about what happened to the Oobleck under various conditions.

Here are a few pictures of the students enjoying getting messy with this hands-on project, which had them thinking about if Oobleck behaves like a solid or a liquid, or both! (Click pictures to enlarge).

$1.00 Halloween Dress Down Tomorrow

In keeping with the fun spirit of Halloween, students may pay $1.00 to come to school in dress down attire tomorrow (Tuesday, October 31st). Dress down attire should be black, orange, and/or purple. NO masks, costumes (except K and Pre-K), painted faces, or colored hair.

Money collected will be donated to Purple Heart Homes, a non-profit organization which helps provides housing solutions for Military Veterans who have been disabled as a result of their service to our country.  The Co-Founder of Purple Heart Homes, Dale Beatty (who was wounded while serving in Iraq), came to speak to our students a few years ago.

Attention All XC Parents

If your runner’s season has finished (i.e. they are not running in the State Championship Meet) please hand-wash your child’s uniform and return it in a Ziploc bag, labeled with your child’s and return it to Coach O’Neill at the school this coming Monday.

If your child will be running in the State Championship Meet, Mrs. O’Neill is looking for parent volunteers to drive runners to Wickham Park tomorrow (10/31) for practice on the course.  Pick-up will be back at SJS at 4:30pm tomorrow.

SJS Scarecrow – We Won!

A huge thank you to everyone that voted for our SJS Scarecrow – we took 1st place in the People’s Choice awards and 2nd place in the Facebook Favorites Competition!  Again, special thanks to parent volunteer Mrs. Piotrowski for organizing this for our school and to the other volunteers (parents and students) who helped design and create the scarecrow!  We have the BEST community at Saint James School!
