Junior Achievement

Thank you to all the UCONN student volunteers who brought the Junior Achievement program to Saint James School today.

Through Junior Achievement, our K-8th grade students spend an entire day working on basic concepts of business and economics at an age-appropriate level.  Each grade has a specific “curriculum” the facilitators present in addition to bringing their own real-life experiences into the discussion.

It’s a fun day that ties in concepts like money management, good communication skills, and entrepreneurship as well as economic concepts and facts about the working world.

Below are pictures from several of the classrooms (Click to enlarge):

Parking is available in the South United Methodist Church/ Manchester Chamber of Commerce parking lot (entrance to lot is located on Hartford Road). Please use the crosswalk to cross the intersection (there is a “walk” button that can be used to stop traffic). Parents are asked to accompany their child across the street as it is a very busy intersection.

Please be sure players wear proper shoes, shin guards, and bring an appropriate size soccer ball and a water bottle. Please put your child’s name on the ball and water bottle.

Also, please remember students must have returned their Character Contract (pledging good sportsmanship) before they can play in any soccer games.  Students who have already participated in a sport this year at SJS do not need to submit a new contract.

SJS 2nd Grade Student Wins CT State Handwriting Competition

We are excited to announce that Jason Miller, a student in Mrs. LaMarche’s 2nd grade class was named a 2018 state of Connecticut winner in Zaner-Bloser’s annual handwriting competition!! Mrs. Zorger – along with Jason’s parents – surprised him with the award this morning after announcements.  The contest recognizes two students per grade – one from a private school and one from a public school – in each state as part of its national handwriting competition.  Our second grade teachers – the only grade from SJS to participate in the contest – has selected Jason’s entry from all of the SJS 2nd grade students to submit to the state level.  Jason’s winning writing sample will now be submitted to the national level.

Mrs. Lamarche also received a special award (being presented to her by Jason below) as well as a $200 coupon that the SJS 2nd grade classes can use towards additional writing/Zaner-Bloser materials!

Congratulations to Jason, Mrs. LaMarche, and the entire 2nd grade!
