Scholastic Book Fair: Parent/Grandparent Volunteers Still Needed

The HSA will be hosting the annual Scholastic Book Fair from Monday, October 2 through Thursday, October 5.  Proceeds from the book fair (up to 50% of your purchase!) go towards funding new books and equipment for the classrooms and the school library.

Volunteers are needed to help set-up/clean-up the book fair and to work at the fair by helping students make selections and serving as cashiers.  Please note that in order to volunteer you must have completed VIRTUS training and a Background Check.

If you are able to help, please click HERE to access the Volunteer Sign Up Genius.  Any questions can be directed to Alicia Poth (aliciapoth@gmail.com).

Any time you can give would be appreciated to help us make this year’s book fair another huge success.  Thank you!

Arrival & Dismissal Reminders

Thank you to all our families for helping us get off to a safe start to the school year with regards to morning arrival and dismissal.  A couple of quick reminders (please share with everyone who drops off/picks up your child as these are things we noticed in the past couple of weeks):

* Do not park in front of/block our neighbor’s driveways under any circumstances;

* Remember the front of the school is for Drop and Go only from 7:30am – 7:50am (parents/guardians must remain in the car in this area);

* Students should exit the car onto the sidewalk side of the street only.  Park Street is extremely busy in the mornings, please do not let your child hop out into the street.

* When driving on Park/Otis pay attention to the crossing guards at all times and do not turn onto Otis Street when the crossing guard is standing in the road.

* Please cross with the Crossing Guard (do not run your student across Park Street).

The safety of our students, parents, and staff is our top priority.  Please communicate this information to other members of your family that help with transportation.

St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish Presents: Discovering Christ

Discovering Christ is a seven-week experience where anyone and everyone is invited to enter into or renew a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, experience the love of God the Father, and be empowered by the Holy Spirit to live as God’s children.  More information can be found in THIS FLYER.

CHET Dream Big Scholarship

For anyone interested, below is a scholarship opportunity from CHET – The Connecticut Higher Education Trust 529 College Savings Program.  We had a couple of student winners from SJS last year AND our school was selected to win a bunch of technology equipment!

Here is a link to the contest information:  https://www.fidelity.com/about-chet/dream-big-competition

Participants are asked to submit an entry based on specific grade-level topics. Students can submit an original essay, video or artwork (painting/drawing or illustration):

K-4th grade: What is something you could do to make your community or neighborhood better?

5th-8th grade: What is something you could do to help make the lives of others better?

3 Grand Prize winners receive $20,000 (one student from each age group), 24 winners receive $6,000 (eight students per age group), 336 winners receive $500 (112 students per age group), and 10 randomly selected participating schools will win $7,500 in tech equipment

Hot Lunch Notice

For K-8 families:  You may have noticed that our Hot Lunch Menu for September listed a Cereal Meal under the “alternative lunch options.”  Please note that the cereal meal is NOT going to be offered going forward – instead a Tortilla Meal option will be provided in addition to the Bagel Plate option.

XC Practice Tomorrow

As a reminder, there is Cross Country practice after school tomorrow (Tuesday) and again on Thursday this week.  Please ensure runners come to school with running clothes/sneakers and a water bottle.

Instrumental Music

As a reminder, Mr. Corcoran will hold a parent meeting this evening – Monday, September 11th – for any grade 4 – 8 parents whose student(s) are interested in joining the SJS band for the first time this year.

Reminder: Parent Volunteer Opportunities

A great big THANK YOU to everyone who came out for our first Home & School Association meeting – It was wonderful to see so many new and returning parents interested in getting involved with our fun community!  The HSA has lots of wonderful events planned for our students and families this school year and – of course – the more involvement we have from our parent/grandparent community, the more that we can do!

Below you will find a sign up sheet for SJS parents/grandparents to indicate what events they would like to assist with.  Everyone is welcome to help, but please remember you do need to complete the background check and VIRTUS training before the event date – IF you have not already done so over the summer or in prior years (this only has to be done one time during your SJS tenure).

Thank you again for your support!  We are looking forward to another great year!

Custodial/Maintenance Position @ SJS

We are still looking to fill this position!  Please help us spread the word if you know anyone that may be interested!  Also, you can share this post on Facebook by clicking HERE.

Popsicle Treats Tomorrow

To thank our students for a great start to the school year especially with the unusual heat and humidity these past few days, Mrs. Zorger would like to treat all SJS Pre-K through Grade 8 students to a nice cold Popsicle tomorrow around mid-morning/before dismissal.  The nurse is ensuring all teachers are aware of allergies, but if you have any concerns about your child having a Popsicle, please do not hesitate to email their homeroom teacher this evening or early tomorrow.
