Attendance Reminders & Clarifications

Dear Parents/Guardians:

As we continue to best meet the educational needs for all our students, we have determined that some clarifications regarding protocols for attendance and reporting of absences is necessary.  This includes all students — those who participate in remote learning as well as those who are in-person learners.

1.  Parents/Guardians must call the school nurse (option #3)  to report any and all absences, regardless of the reason, by 8:00 am.  This includes remote learners.

2. Students who are absent from school for personal reasons (i.e. vacation/travel) should continue to keep up with missing classwork, but are not allowed to attend classes virtually.  Their absence from school will be noted in the school’s daily attendance report.

3. We really appreciate how diligent our parents/guardians have been these past few weeks in keeping students home from school at the sign of any illness (even if students are not experiencing the “high-risk” COVID symptoms).  These students, and students who are remaining home due to a COVID-related issue (quarantining due to close contact with a COVID-positive person, experiencing COVID-related symptoms, or awaiting COVID test results), but are otherwise able to attend school, may sign in remotely and attend classes virtually.  A parent/guardian must call the school nurse to report the student’s absence from in-person learning (please do not email the teacher or the school office of the absence).

With devices now being sent home nightly, it is possible that K – 3 students needing to stay home (not for personal reasons) can be part of the remote learning on their first day of absence.  If the decision is made too close to the start of the school day, teachers will not have time to upload the materials to the Seesaw platform. Students can still live-stream from home beginning at 8:00am as long as all other remote learning protocol are followed.

Please do note, however, if the student is truly not feeling well and is not able to remain online with their class for a full day, they really do need to take the day as a “sick day”.

**It might be helpful to familiarize yourself with the “Student Expectations for Remote Learning” (click to open), also found in the parent/student handbook. in case your student needs to attend class remotely.

**Students who are traveling or are on vacation, will be marked absent, and are expected to complete the classwork posted in their Google Classroom. They may not attend classes virtually. Please refer to the parent/student handbook for additional information regarding attendance and school policy.

**Reminder: Students (in-person and remote) are tardy if they are not in school when the bell rings at 7:55 am.

Reminder: Morning Drop & Go

If you are using the “Drop & Go” area to drop off your student(s) in the morning, please remember students need to be ready to depart the car quickly (mask is already on, backpack in hand, etc).  More families are now using the Drop & Go option and traffic is starting to back up down Park Street.

If your child is not fully ready to exit the car, please find an alternate place to park.  Parents should not get out of the car in the Drop & Go area and students should be getting out on the curb side of the car only (not into the busy street).

In addition, please remember to pull all the way up in front of the school (just don’t block the crosswalk).  We want to utilize the entire length of that curb in front of the main school and the Pre-K parking lot.

In addition, signs around the school clearly note acceptable parking areas.  Please obey the traffic signs at all times of day for the safety of our students and parents!

Cherrydale Fundraiser Turn-In Day Tomorrow

Thank you to everyone who has been supporting our school by participating in the Cherrydale fundraiser!

If your child has earned any additional tickets to turn in for the “Oinksterz” prizes, please send them in tomorrow with your student.  Tickets will be processed and “Oinksterz” will be sent home early next week.

Please remember the Cherrydale fundraiser will be ending this coming Wednesday, October 7th so please be sure all orders are placed before then.

Health Protocol Clarification

To clarify a point from our school’s Health & Wellness Plan:

If a student tests positive for COVID-19 or has been exposed/in contact with someone who has tested positive, the parent/guardian should call Mrs. Vignati (our school nurse) immediately.   If a positive test result is received after 3:00pm or over a weekend, please email Mrs. Zorger immediately at bzorger@saintjamesschool.net.

Please remember to do a health assessment on your child every morning and keep them home if they are experiencing any symptoms of illness, always erring on the side of caution.  You can refer to the following , which is also posted on our school’s Fall 2020/COVID Informational Page.

12:05pm Dismissal Tomorrow (Tuesday)

As a reminder, tomorrow ( Tuesday 9/29) is a 12:05pm dismissal day.  Aftercare will be in session, but all students attending aftercare will all need to bring a lunch from home (no hot lunch is served on early dismissal days).

If you have not already done so, you may wish to click HERE and choose “subscribe to filtered calendar” at the bottom.  This will add just our days off/early dismissal days to your calendar.  Or, you can  click on the calendar tile in our SJS App and use the “+” next to important events  (such as days off/early dismissal days) to add them to your personal calendar.

Attention Parents of 7th & 8th Grade Boys

Xavier High School will offer two ways for prospective students and their parents to learn more about the school. Xavier will be hosting an in-person open house on October 18th with start times from 1 to 3:30 pm. The open house will give families an overview of Xavier and an opportunity to see the school. Families are asked to limit their party to three. Advance registration is required and can be done here. For those unable to attend the open house, we will have a virtual information session on October 19 at 6:30 pm. Advance registration is required and can be done here.

8th graders can begin their application to Xavier today. Start by completing the application for admission form and selecting a test registration date. The Entrance Exam will be offered on November 7 and 14 in person at Xavier. Families opting for an online test or a 1:1 test session can contact Nicholas Grasso, Director of Admissions through e-mail (nmgrasso@xavierhighschool.org), for more information about those options. All application materials, which include essay, letters of recommendation, and report cards are due by November 23.

Attention Remote Learners

Just a reminder to our remote learner families that students need to be logged in to their class by 8:00am to be counted as attending school.  We are starting to see students arrive “late” which is disruptive to the class and the classroom routine.

Also, for our remote learners in the upper grades, the teachers will be providing a half-day schedule for you to follow on Tuesday.  Please make sure you are in receipt of that prior to Tuesday morning.
