Welcome From the HSA

The Home and School Association (HSA) would like to welcome all new and returning families to the new school year.  There are lots of fun activities planned and we encourage you to participate!  Please take a few minutes to look over the HSA Welcome Packet (click here) for detailed information on events, meetings and volunteer opportunities.

The first HSA meeting will be held in the school cafeteria on September 14 from 7-8pm.  If you cannot attend, there will also be a morning meeting on September 15 from 9:30-10:30am in the church hall.  The meetings will give you a chance to meet several of our parent volunteers, hear about upcoming events, and learn about the many ways you can help out throughout the year.

For your convenience, a one-page HSA calendar can be found HERE.

Reminder: School Handbook

A hard copy of the 2017-2018 Saint James School handbook came home with your youngest child last week.  All parents and students are required to sign the back page and return it to your youngest child’s homeroom teacher by TOMORROW (Wednesday).  If you misplaced your copy, a copy of the handbook is attached below and may be found in the Documents & Forms section of our school website.

Parent Student Handbook 2017-2018

Blue and White Emergency contact cards are also now due if you have not sent those back with your child/ren.

Instrumental Music New Student/Parent Meeting (Gr. 4 – 8)

Tomorrow evening (Wednesday, September 6th) Mr. Corcoran will have a meeting for all students joining the instrumental music program at our school for the first time  (grades 4 – 8) and their parents at 6:30pm in the cafeteria.  At this meeting parents/students can sign up for the instrumental music program and get information on instrumental rentals.

Cherrydale Fall Fundraiser

All students (PreK-Grade 8) should have received a Fall Fundraiser packet on Friday from Cherrydale Fundraising.  This catalog-based fundraiser offers a wide-range of items including wrapping paper, kitchen gadgets, home decor, candles, cookies, cakes, and candy — there is something for everyone!

Sales can be made in person using the order form from the packet or online at cherrydale.com.  At the end of the fundraiser, students will earn prizes based on the total number of items sold.  In addition, throughout the sale, there are 3 chances to earn extra incentives.  Turn-in dates for “Forest Friends” incentives are:

Friday, September 8

Friday, September 15

Friday, September 22

Please return all order forms (top two copies ONLY) and payment no later than Friday, September 22.  Checks should be payable to “St. James School” and we ask that you write your child’s name on the memo line of the check.

This fundraiser is one of our most successful of the year and we appreciate your participation!  If you have any questions, please contact the school office or email our school’s fundraising Chair, Kate Davis, at 70greenbean@sbcglobal.net.

Back-to-School Mass

Today, Saint James School students in 1st – 8th grade attended their first Mass of the school year.  Below are a few pictures of the students at Church as we celebrate the community we share and kick off another great year of learning and growing at SJS (click images to enlarge).

SJS Cross Country

Attention Cross Country Runners,

The first Cross Country practice of the season will be held on Tuesday, September 5th. It will be open to all SJS students in 5th – 8th grade.

In order to participate on Tuesday, all three items below must be turned in by Tuesday morning:

  1. The completed 2017-2018 Athletic Health Form, signed by the child’s doctor;
  2. The $35.00 cross country fee required for each participant (make checks out to “Saint James School”); and
  3. The completed  2017-2018 SJS Cross Country Participation Form

Completed forms and/or payment can be given to the teacher by the student or dropped off at the main office by the parent/guardian.  (Please only pay the Cross Country fee at this time, even if your child will be doing other sports).

There will be a Cross Country meeting for students on Tuesday immediately after school, followed by the first practice of the year.  Parents should arrange to pick their child/ren up in the breezeway or gym at 3:30pm.  Students who don’t have their completed paperwork ready for Tuesday, but plan to participate may attend the meeting at 2:00pm, but will not be eligible to run with the team on Tuesday (and will need a ride home at approximately 2:20pm).

Practices are on most Tuesdays and Thursdays with a few exceptions due to ½ days or scheduled meets.  At the end of the school day, XC students will be dismissed with their class to the gym with the “Walkers,” where they will leave their backpacks, change, and begin practice.  Practices are from 2:15-3:30pm.

Meets that occur during the week are open to all XC runners.  Invitational meets, scheduled on Saturdays, are for middle school students only (6th-8th).  As in the past, students are expected to obtain their own transportation to the meets.  Carpooling between families is highly recommended!  Coach O’Neill will meet everyone at the determined XC meet site.

If anyone is interested in assisting during the season, Mrs. O’Neill would welcome their help.  We anticipate a good turnout and it becomes challenging to keep all the kids together once they begin running. Please contact Coach O’Neill if you can help (joneill@saintjamesschool.net).

Cross country is a fun and rewarding experience for the kids.  We look forward to the upcoming season!

Drop-Off & Pick-Up For Tuesday

Tuesday morning we will be utilizing standard drop-off procedures.  This means all students will enter through the breezeway doors.  Staff and helpers will be available in the breezeway to escort new and younger students to the correct spot.

If you are doing curbside drop-and-go in front of the school – please remember not to get out of your car.  Curbside drop-and-go is meant for quick drop-offs only.  If you need to get out of your car to help your child or wish to walk your child to the breezeway door, you must find a parking spot.

Also, if you are not registered for the before-care/after-care program, your child cannot be dropped off before 7:30am.  Students must at school by 7:50am.

Please remember not to park (at drop-off and pick-up):

  • ON CHURCH STREET BEFORE THE WHITE FENCE (from Park Street to Oak Place).  This is where the buses park in the morning and afternoon
  • In the Handicap spots in St. Mary’s church lot (unless you have a Handicap permit)
  • Anywhere in front of Saint James School or the White House across the street (or any other areas noted with a No Parking Sign)

Thank you to all our parents and staff for a GREAT first two days of the 2017-2018 school year!  Remember, there is no school on Monday for the Labor Day Holiday – we will see you back at school on Tuesday morning!  Wishing you all a fun, relaxing, and enjoyable long weekend!
