Living Lent: Family Opportunities for Growth

With the arrival of the Lenten season, we would like to take the opportunity to offer our families some ideas that can help spark conversations and strengthen the spirituality of your household.

Each week of Lent, we will be offering a Scripture passage, Lenten quotation, or prayer activity for your family to share together. We hope these suggestions will enrich your family’s journey through Lent, ending in a more blessed and joyful Easter.

On this first day of Lent, we reflect on these words from Pope Francis:

Do you want to fast this Lent?

Fast from hurting words and say kind words.
Fast from sadness and be filled with gratitude.
Fast from anger and be filled with patience.
Fast from pessimism and be filled with hope.
Fast from worries and trust in God.
Fast from complaints and contemplate simplicity.
Fast from pressures and be prayerful.
Fast from bitterness and fill your heart with joy.
Fast from selfishness and be compassionate to others.
Fast from grudges and be reconciled.
Fast from words and be silent so you can listen.

Congratulations JV Girls!

Congratulations to the SJS JV Girls on a fantastic 2 point win (in overtime!) over St. Tim’s last night during the first round of playoffs.  Despite an overall losing record this season, these girls have continued to practice hard and play their best, and it showed during last night’s game.  Congratulations to Anya T. for scoring the majority of the team’s points with 6 baskets.  Ayden R. and Ayva S. also scored during the game, with numerous assists and solid defense from the entire team to pull it all together.

Reminder: This Friday – $1.00 Dress Down & Books

Saint James School will join schools across the country in honoring Dr. Seuss’ birthday and the Read Across America initiative THIS Friday, March 1st.  In addition to some special reading activities that day, March 1st will also be $1.00 Dress Down for students and staff.  Students are encouraged to dress Dr. Seuss style (i.e. Thing 1/Thing 2, Fox in Socks, Cat in the Hat, etc).  All students should also bring in a Dr. Seuss book as there will be school-wide book buddy activities that day.  Students that don’t have a Dr. Seuss book or Dr. Seuss-type book to bring in will be able to borrow one from the library.

Proceeds from the dress down will benefit Catholic Charities’ Family Literacy Program which promotes reading and literacy education among impoverished families.
