SJS Rocks at Manchester Elementary School XC Challenge!

Congratulations to all the runners at Saturday’s Manchester Elementary School Cross Country Challenge at Manchester High School.  SJS runners took home 24 individual medals (given to the first 15 finishers in each race) and an amazing 4 First Place Trophies and 2 Second Place Trophies (based on the combined score of the top 5 finishers from each school).  This means, SJS scored in the top 2 (out of 11 Manchester schools participating) in 6 of the 8 races!  Top scorers were recognized on the morning announcements today.

A huge thank you to all the parents, students, and teachers who came out for this fun event and also to our awesome parent volunteers:   Mr. & Mrs. Piotrowski, Mrs. Caldwell, Mrs. Poth, and Mrs. Herr.

Below are some pictures from Saturday’s event (click to enlarge).

SJS XC Continues to Dominate

The SJS cross country team was back at Illing Middle School yesterday.  This time it was a tri-meet against Illing and Ellington.  The girls again raced to a first place finish with the top 5 runners for Saint James taking 2nd – 6th place!  Lindsay O’Neill led the charge, placing 2nd overall with Isabelle Burke, Ally Ansaldi, Kaitlyn Nyberg, and Liz Munns running close together for 3rd-6th place respectively.

Winning the boys race with a first place finish was Kyle Pelletier, who bettered his time by almost a full minute from last week’s race.  AJ Bushnell, who has been consistently improving his time, took 2nd for the team and 5th overall.  Dominic Cavallo and Kevin Leger both ran strong races, placing 8th and 9th, while 5th grader Eric Ansaldi ran his best race, placing 14th and bettering his best time by a minute and a half.

The team’s next competition will be the McGee Invitational at Sage Park in Berlin on Saturday.  All runners must be at the course by 8:15am.

Pictures from last weekend’s Wickham Park Invitational can be viewed HERE.

3rd Grade Science Lab

Yesterday, 3rd grade students worked on their first formal lab of the year during Science class: making and observing Oobleck – a “non-Newtonian fluid” – meaning a substance that can be a solid or a liquid depending on how much force is applied.

As a class, the students developed a name for the project and a “hypothesis.”  Breaking into small groups, students completed the most fun part – combining cornstarch and water and observing what happens.  Then, they dropped in various items such as a marble, paper, and a paperclip.  Next, students picked up the Oobleck and rolled it in their hands to make a ball – then watched it flatten out again.

Once everything was cleaned up, Mrs. Moran and the students went on to discuss what they observed and what conclusions could be made.  The students loved this hands-on project which had them thinking about if Oobleck behaves like a solid or a liquid, or both!  (Click pictures to enlarge).

3rd Grade Landscape Art Lesson

Yesterday, SJS Art Teacher Mrs. Sabatella took advantage of the beautiful fall day to teach the 3rd graders about landscape drawings.  The specific lesson pictured below focused around a tree with the leaves changing color.  Students were first instructed on how to sketch out a basic tree and then Mrs. Sabatella encouraged them to use their creativity to make it unique (click pictures to enlarge).

The HSA is looking for help sorting the Cherrydale fundraiser orders on Wednesday 10/26. We will be on the stage all day sorting orders and distributing them at pick up. If you are able to help for any part of the day please contact parent volunteer Kate Davis at 70greenbean@sbcglobal.net. Any time you can give is appreciated. Thank you!

2016 Girls and Boys Basketball

The SJS Basketball program will be getting underway shortly.  Below please find a list of dates pertinent for Parent Informational Meetings, Open Gym times and Team selection days.

Open Gym (basketball free-play) dates are completely voluntary and will have no impact on Team selections (must have your basketball paperwork and health form on file to participate). Each student athlete registered for Basketball will make one of the various St. James Teams, but because of large headcount numbers we will need to have Team selection days.

Team practices will commence first week of November.  Parents please make every effort to attend Informational meetings where Coaches will share league status updates, vision for program, practice and game commitments along with answering any questions you may have. No student will be allowed to participate in any basketball event without completed registration, payment, and medical health form filed at the school office.  Looking forward to a great year for our Student Athletes!
