A Message from Saint James Church

As you are likely aware, some major changes were announced within the Archdiocese of Hartford this past weekend.  For many, these changes are devastating as many beloved Parishes have been slated to merge or close, and many Priests are being reassigned to different Parishes.

For the Saint James Community, the changes are as follows:  On June 29th, Assumption Church will be merged with Saint James Church.  Father Cavanaugh will remain as Pastor and Father Carlson and Father Burns will remain here to assist him.  Father Jack Pahl, Pastor of Assumption Church, will join them in their duties at both Assumption and Saint James.  Later, upon the retirement of Father Pahl, Assumption Church will be closed.

This will be a difficult transition for many and we extend our support and prayers to our SJS families who are impacted by the changes.

Save the Date: Mom’s Night Out

4th Graders Research Sea Creatures

Saint James 4th grade students recently finished researching and writing a report on an assigned sea creature.  Research was gathered using at least one book and at least one website, with students utilizing some of their science class time to conduct research on the school’s iPads.  Students also designed a cover for their report during one of their weekly art classes.

For homework, 4th graders were tasked with creating a model of their animal using recyclable materials and/or craft-related items.  The finished projects were presented to students in the younger grades. Below are a few pictures of students with their models and research reports, as well as them speaking to students in the younger grades (click to enlarge).

Staff Appreciation Week & Luncheon

In keeping with tradition, Saint James School will hold several Staff Appreciation events during the week of May 29th. Hosted by the SJS HSA, this is a special way for our school community to show gratitude to the teachers, administrators, and staff for all they do for our children!

This year, to keep things simple, we are trying something new.  Instead of asking for families to provide specific items, we are asking for a donation of $5.00 per family (or any amount you are comfortable giving).  The donations will be used to cover a variety of special things for our teachers and staff throughout the week–treats, gifts, and a huge Staff Appreciation Luncheon on May 31st with tons of food and goodies.

Please send your donation (cash only please) in an envelope labeled Office, Attn: Amy Santangelo by this Friday, 5/4.

The Staff Appreciation Luncheon will be held on May 31 and we need volunteers to help out that day.  Please contact Amy Santangelo (amybsantangelo@gmail.com) if you are interested in volunteering or have any raffle items to donate.

Thank you for helping us make the week so special for all the teachers and staff make our school so special!

** Please note, there was an error in the Saber Stories newsletter regarding the Staff Luncheon.  We are not using Perfect Potluck this year.  The May Saber Stories Newsletter has been updated to reflect the change.  We apologize for the confusion.

International Day

Congratulations to the Saint James School 8th Grade class on the outstanding job they did hosting International Day today.  International Day is an annual project for the 8th Graders, where they showcase their research on an assigned country.  Costumes, games, props, maps, and traditional dishes are part of the festivities.  Students in all the other grades have an opportunity to visit the showcase throughout the day and the 8th Graders share information about their assigned country.
