Sixth grade students at Saint James School recently completed an innovative STREAM project that focused on using creativity and design skills to develop tactile board games for individuals with visual impairments. Under the guidance of STREAM teacher Mrs. Alicia Poth, students began by watching online interviews and engaging in classroom discussion to understand what it means to be legally blind and fully blind. After researching what attributes would be helpful for creating games for people with visual impairments, students worked in small groups to brainstorm ideas, sketch out prototypes, and use technology to bring their finished concepts into production. The guidelines for this innovative project were simple – games had to be completely playable through the sense of touch and had to be designed for print on one of the school’s 3D printers. Each game also had to be accompanied by written game rules.
The finished products will be donated to National Federation of the Blind of Connecticut for use in their children’s programs.
Great job Sabers!
